First Workshop of the AMR Patient Group
Wednesday 16 December, 10:00- 12:00 (CET)
Health First Europe is organising the first workshop of the newly created AMR Patient Group “Addressing antimicrobial resistance and healthcare-associated infections through patient empowerment” which will take place on Wednesday 16 December 2020 from 10:00 to 12:00 CET via RingCentral.
Europe’s first AMR Patient Group was officially launched on the 18th November 2020 to coincide with European Antibiotic Awareness Day 2020 and World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18-24 November). The AMR Patient Group is comprised of national patient associations from across Europe. The group aims to address the gap in awareness at the patient-level about the danger of antibiotic misuse and the lack of effective infection prevention measures. For more background information, please click here.
The purpose of the workshop aims to give participants a comprehensive knowledge of the issue of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and healthcare associated infections (HAIs), the state of play in Europe, current challenges and impact on the society with the view to develop patient expertise and role so that everyone understands when it is appropriate to take antibiotics and how to take them responsibly.
The virtual workshop will bring together high-level speakers from the ECDC, country-level experts and EU health stakeholders aiming to provide participants with a comprehensive knowledge of the issue of AMR and HAIs, and ultimately to enhance patient safety in Europe.

The debate will feature contributions from:
- Dominique Monnet – ECDC
- Massimo Sartelli – Department of General and Emergency Surgery, Member of the Hospital Infection Control Committee, Macerata Hospital, Italy
- Annabel Seebohm – Standing Committee of European Doctors

Virtual Meeting – Prevention at the heart of European health systems
Knowledge is power: knowing a condition allows us to act promptly and prevent harm. Screening and early diagnosis play a key role in helping patients to live healthier and longer lives. Regular exams and screening tests can detect disease in its earliest stages substantially, increasing the chance of curing it and helping patients to return to their original health.
Health First Europe together with the co-chairs of the EP Interest Group on Innovation in Health and Social Care would like to give its concrete contribution to the debate on transforming healthcare, starting from fostering secondary prevention.
This virtual meeting will involve a broad and diverse range of health stakeholders to formulate concrete proposals for the future of a strong European Health Union.
Key issues to be discussed:
- Investing into secondary prevention and preparedness to optimise public health response to health threats
- Good practices and policy actions to foster screening and early diagnosis in Europe
- The role for clinical laboratories in fostering access to screening
Keynote contributors
Elisabeth Dupont – International Diabetes Federation – (IDF Europe)
Isabel Rubio – European Cancer Organisation (ECCO)
Tanja Valentin – MedTech Europe
Damien Gruson – Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc (UCLouvain)
We hope to see you online at our virtual roundtable!

My City-Lab Talk Series
AI transforming cardiovascular disease management and care
#EUCitylabs
Wednesday, 18 November 12:15 – 13:30 CET via Webinar
REGISTER HERE
The fourth and final edition of My City-Lab Talk Series on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and healthcare will take place on 18 November via a webinar in the framework of the 2020 Annual Congress of the European Health Management Association (EHMA). The event will focus on the role of AI in transforming cardiovascular disease and management.
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Europe. CVD causes over 1.8 million deaths each year or 37% of all deaths in the EU. Each year, there are over 6.1 million new cases of CVD and almost 49 million Europeans live with CVD. The number of those affected has grown steadily over the past 30 years, making CVD one of the heaviest burdens on EU healthcare systems.
The purpose of the informal debate will be to offer a dynamic discussion among key stakeholders and policymakers on the ways in which AI can support the screening and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). This will be done through a discussion on the benefits and risks of such technologies as well as the barriers to their deployment. Additionally, we will also look at some of the already existing strategies for CVD screening by means of AI as well as the ways in which EU countries could boost patient safety through the uptake of AI-assisted solutions in CVD care.

The debate will feature insights from:
- MEP Maria Carvalho – Co-Chair of the MEP Heart Group at the European Parliament
- The Heart Failure Policy Network
- European Society of Cardiology
- European Heart Network
- Healthcare professionals
We hope to see you there!

Health First Europe is organising a virtual roundtable event entitled Pathways for fostering patient safety across Europe: Learning from regional success stories, which will take place on 8 September between 11:00-12:30 CEST via a webinar.
The purpose of the discussion is to bring together healthcare authorities, patients, healthcare providers and workers as well as EU policymakers to debate the current landscape surrounding patient safety in Europe and showcase the patient safety success stories from across Europe’s regions and local governments.
Patient safety remains a challenge for European healthcare systems. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), medication errors and healthcare-related adverse events occur in 8% to 12% of the hospitalizations in Europe. Nearly half of the harm is believed to be preventable. Lapses in safety not only result in significant patient suffering but represent a considerable financial burden as well. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimates that direct costs of unnecessary harm to patients can amount to as much as 5% of total health expenditure.

Join us for a lively discussion featuring insights from:
- ECDC – European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control
- The European Parliament
- European Committee of the Regions
- UEHP – European Union of Private Hospitals
- IAPO – International Alliance of Patients’ Organizations
- University of Ferrara (Italy)
- University of Geneva (Switzerland)
We hope to welcome you at our roundtable!

ROUNDTABLE: Patterns to tackle AMR
Designing effective HAI prevention and control programmes in Europe
Tuesday 29 January 2019, 12:00 – 14:30
European Parliament
Patient safety and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) have become major public health concerns at both European and national level.
It is estimated that 8-12% of patients admitted to hospital in the EU suffer from adverse events whilst receiving healthcare. Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) represent approximately 25% of those adverse events.
Strengthening infection prevention and control practices and implementing antimicrobial stewardship are essential to prevent HAIs and counteract the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.
The roundtable aims at engaging policymakers and relevant representatives in a dynamic debate on patient safety and HAIs aimed at measuring the current levels of safety in health settings and considering key proposals to strengthen infection prevention and control practices across Europe.
