The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented worldwide health crisis with severe socio-economic consequences and human suffering, particularly for the most vulnerable people, including those with chronic conditions. Moreover, personnel in health care settings have been exposed to great health risks treating COVID-19 patients.
This experience has demonstrated that there is a need for further action at Union level to support cooperation and coordination among the Member States. The EU Commission has put forward a new, €5.1 billion health programme to strengthen the resilience of health systems and promote innovation in the health sector. Now that the EU4Health Programme has been recently approved by the European Parliament and the Council, how should it be advanced to make European health systems safer and more resilient?
Intended to strengthen capabilities to prevent, prepare for, respond to and manage health crises within the Union, the Programme has the potential to support a wide range of EU health legislation.
Health First Europe and the Co-chairs of the EP Interest Group on Innovation in Health and Social Care would like to make a tangible contribution to this debate.
This virtual meeting will involve a broad and diverse range of health stakeholders to formulate concrete proposals and exchange best practices for the future of a strong European Health Union.
Key issues to be discussed:
- Supporting actions for disease prevention, for health promotion and for addressing health determinants
- Promoting the implementation of best practices and promoting data sharing
- Reinforcing the healthcare workforce
